Founded in 2025, obsidiana is an independent magazine printed in Mexico, dedicated to the critical study of the image beyond photography. Edited by Johann Mergenthaler and Marco Ramírez, it connects historical archives with contemporary practices. Published in Spanish, English, and French, each issue pairs a historical archive with emerging voices.
Each release consists of two complementary issues: one dedicated to the study of a historical archive, and the other focused on emerging contemporary practices. This structure proposes a curatorial model in print that places different temporalities and visual strategies in dialogue.
Obsidiana is distributed in Mexico City, New York, and Paris, establishing an international presence aimed at positioning visual production from Mexico within a broader global discourse.

Obsidian:
Mirror and Weapon of Photographic Vision
M
Obsidian, that volcanic rock with its dark sheen and razor-sharp edge, has long been a symbol of duality: a mirror that reveals hidden truths and a weapon that cuts with precision and purpose. Choosing its name for a photography magazine is no coincidence; it is a tribute to its ability to encapsulate the very essence of this art, which is both contemplative and transformative.
In Mesoamerican cultures, obsidian was used as a mirror. Carefully polished, it allowed one to see beyond the surface, to delve into the soul of the one reflected in it. Similarly, photography functions as a mirror of the world. Each image captures a fraction of reality, but it also projects an interpretation, a dialogue between the photographer and their surroundings. The camera, like obsidian, is a tool for revealing the invisible, for reflecting on the obvious, and for reinterpreting it.
But obsidian was not just a mirror; it was also a sharp weapon, a tool for survival. Its cutting edges were used to build, to defend, and to transform. Likewise, photography, beyond observing and reflecting, has the power to cut, to question established structures, and to open new possibilities. An image can wound, challenge, or heal. It can be an act of resistance or an invitation to deep contemplation.
Obsidian magazine seeks to encapsulate this duality. Each photograph published is a piece that reflects the world as it is, but also as it could be. The photographers featured in its pages are like ancient obsidian craftsmen: they refine their vision to polish images that reveal the hidden, while also using photography as a weapon to sculpt life, break paradigms, and confront truths.
In a world where superficiality abounds, Obsidian stands as a space for reflection and action, for looking beyond the obvious and embracing the idea that every photograph is a blade that can change our perception. Like obsidian, it is dark, mysterious, and sharp—a reminder that artistic vision does not merely observe, but also transforms.
